About

Firehouse Fitness is a product of its past. It is influenced by the history of the town, the fire department, the bookstore, the Pioneer Valley, and all the people involved with them. Read our story below; we hope you’ll be a part of our future.

Old FIrehouse Photo

In the 1930s in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, a large brick firehouse was built by a New Deal program in the center of town. Sixty years later, a bookdealer named Ken Schoen bought the then-defunct firehouse and turned the first floor into an out-of-print used bookstore. He renovated the upstairs with his wife and lived there with her and their two daughters.

Forty years after that, South Deerfield is a growing and prosperous township, still bearing the roots of its farming history, but supported by incoming talent, wealth, progress, and the support of UMass students from Amherst and visitors from the nearby cities of Northampton and Greenfield. As the bookstore closes its garage doors, a new chapter unfolds for the firehouse; one that South Deerfield—and the surrounding hilltowns—needs.

A 24/7 community fitness club serving Hampshire and Franklin Counties.

A special place to join, connect, learn, and get fit. We know that fitness can mean something different to everyone, so we strive to make the Firehouse a place where anyone can find their focus.

We believe in small work that fits into real lives. Limited space, limited time, imperfect conditions. Progress that tolerates interruption; consistency above all else. And we believe the secret to consistency is loving what you do.

We champion evidence-based approaches and practices. This means:

  • Dogma never drives our recommendations or teachings, we adapt
  • Perfecting foundations to make reliable progress early
  • Never adding complexity for its own sake
  • Emphasizing the practice of showing up consistently before advancing to optimization
  • We are curious

One of our founding principles is equal encouragement and support for beginners and advanced members.

The Firehouse can be the beginning, middle, and end of your journey. Check us out:
